Finding the site: Rico lies about midway between Dolores and Telluride on CO 145. Many mines can be seen from the highway, but be sure to take the side roads and trails, too. Because of the private property here, it will save you a lot of time and trouble if you make local inquiries before you head up those four-wheel-drive roads. Few things are more frustrating than fighting 10 miles of bad road only to come to a locked gate.
